Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals Friday Results for Qualifying Round 1 COMMERCE, Ga. - ATLANTA - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 27th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.948/197.62, Now #1 Right Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 26.975/24.72, Now #2 3:55 p.m. and we begin our first round of Pro Stock. A bunch of the bikes in the previous session were hitting their rev limiters which is usually an indication of a loose track, so this might be interesting. Haas pulls to the line in Jim Cunningham's brand new Mustang. Northrop lines up in the right lane with Jenkins power. Northrop mashes the tires hard and heads toward the wall. Haas was hugging the centerline all the way through. Left Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 6.817/202.30, Now #1 Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 8.168/115.51, Now #3 Here's a couple of long-time Division 3 racers. It's good to see Schmidt back behind the wheel. Both head to the centerline and one car goes on the limiter in first gear This is going to be a crew chief's session. Left Lane: Bill Windham Runs 18.068/43.45, Now #4 Windham makes a good burnout and backs up straight and true. Nice driving by Bill. The RPMs went through the roof as the car headed toward the center and Windham decided to call it quits for now. Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 15.279/44.07, Now #4 Watson gets a single in the right lane for this session. Ben does the same as everybody else. The engine goes to the moon, and the car heads toward the wall. Left Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.823/202.79, Now #3 Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.779/203.46, Now #1 Krisher does the best job yet off the line and it shows. He carded a 1.000 sixty foot and a nice move to the 330. There's a track out there, but the crew chiefs will have to find it. Left Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 13.963/54.98, Now #7 Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.753/204.57, Now #1 Hammonds shows them all how it's done with his Jerry Eckmann setup. Humpreys heads out of control and clicks it off. Left Lane: Matt Scranton Runs 6.771/204.23, Now #3 Right Lane: Roger Brogdon Runs 6.758/204.17, Now #2 Brogdon is looking for a return to his stellar performances of earlier this season. Scranton should have everything he needs to run at the very top. Scranton's car is moving around a bit but it doesn't seem to hurt the performance. Brogdon lays down a good one, but remember we have a bunch of big guns still sitting in staging. Left Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.741/205.57, Now #2 Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.692/206.13, Now #1 Kenny runs super close to the track record which is a 6.690. It looks like the right lane is a couple of huns quicker at this point. It's yielding some great short times. Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 12.279/69.76, Now #12 Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.734/204.76, Now #2 Koretsky's on the PA thanking Steve Schmidt for the power. Morgan makes a nasty move toward the centerline and Yates gets to the finish without any theatrics. Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.720/205.47, Now #3 Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.696/205.76, Now #2 Two Mopars here, side by side. I remember when Richie was the bright new talent, the position that Enders now holds. She's going to win one real soon, I bet ya. Both cars go way up to the top, number 2 and 3. Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.753/205.72, Now #7 Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.747/205.82, Now #6 And now the Johnson clan, Warren fresh off his admittance into the prestigious Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega. That's a tremendous honor for the Professor. WJ's car carried the front end as it sort of waddled off the line. Kurt did slightly better in the other lane but you know both racers won't be happy. Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.717/205.79, Now #3 Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.743/205.01, Now #7 Stanfield is in the right lane and could easily get the crowd buzzing. Gaines has been running strong lately, too. Those passes looked a bit quicker than they really were. Haas is now on the bump. Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.712/205.85, Now #4 Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.702/205.54, Now #3 It's Mopar vesus Goat. Edwards still continues to do double duty since he's also the crew chief making the setup calls. Koretsky's run is looking better and better. Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.703/205.63, Now #4 Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.720/204.79, Now #8 Two bright yellow cars pull to the line, both with that exceptional Cagnazzi power. Both cars leave almost dead even and are tied together down the track. These later pairs seem to be hooking pretty well, with very little wasted motion. And Kenny still stays on top. Scranton is on the bump. Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.677/207.21, Now #1 Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.679/207.40, Now #2 And finally, the event's sponsor's cars line up. And like a dragstrip with a mirror in the center, the cars are welded together. Like all good teams, these guys like to share. Jason cards a track record ET but shares with the boss since Greg gets the track MPH record. Dominance. Total dominance. But right now, there's a whole bunch of cars heading back to the pits intent on changing all that. And the best part is, probably 6 or 8 of them are capable of doing it. Hammonds stays in on the bump and there's lots of racing to come. Stay tuned. He does a nice job, and this time the car leaves straight. He stays in it throughout and pulls off a nice looking pass. Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 17.096/41.00, Now #28 Best prior run: 26.975/24.72, Was #28 Northrup is the other half of the first pair, and again gets a single. He stages, leaves, and immediately blows the tires off. The car makes an immediate move to the center line and that's it for him. Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.727/204.63, Now #11 Best prior run: 15.279/44.07, Was #27 Right Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.744/205.10, Now #15 Best prior run: 13.963/54.98, Was #26 Both racers need to get down the track this session to have any chance of making the field. And both do just that. Humpreys likely will not stay in, but Watson may have a chance. Of course, take a look at next pair pulling into the water. Left Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.737/205.19, Now #14 Best prior run: 8.168/115.51, Was #26 Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.685/206.10, Now #3 Best prior run: 12.279/69.76, Was #27 Both of these cars are capable of going deep into the field. Morgan does, Steve doesn't. The Schmidt Cobalt was waggling its tail all the way to half track and in this class, that's not the way you want things to happen. Morgan once again reminds us that he can run with the best. Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.718/204.23, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.779/203.46, Was #23 Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.877/198.99, Now #27 Best prior run: 6.948/197.62, Was #27 Haas cards a 1.01 sixty foot and the run doesn't get much better from there. Krisher gets in. Left Lane: Roger Brogdon Runs 6.732/204.85, Now #14 Best prior run: 6.758/204.17, Was #22 Right Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.839/184.27, Now #25 Best prior run: 6.823/202.79, Was #25 The sun is mostly behind the stands and the track is cooling quickly.
Brogdon gets in for now but can't feel safe. Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.702/206.01, Now #6 Best prior run: 6.753/204.57, Was #22 Right Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 6.824/202.88, Now #24 Best prior run: 6.817/202.30, Was #24 Hammonds was on the bump when the session started, but at this point he's #22.
Former GM Racing honcho Harry Turner is on the Hammonds team and is watching intently as Tom stages.
It's a slick looking pass for Hammonds as he goes deep into the field. Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.687/206.39, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.747/205.82, Was #21 Right Lane: Matt Scranton No Time, Now #23 Best prior run: 6.771/204.23, Was #23 KJ is on the outside looking in, and this is his home track.
That's what Kurt wanted to see, but Scranton's run was lost right off the line. Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.685/206.01, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.743/205.01, Was #20 Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.690/206.80, Now #6 Best prior run: 6.753/205.72, Was #22 I have a feeling this field is going to have more movement than a coffee can full of nightcrawlers.
Will the info from Kurt's hit help Warren? The answer is yes.
But don't forget that Stanfield guy, as he goes into the provisional #4 position.
They're doing a bit of mopping on the starting line in Stanfield's lane. It doesn't look too serious and none of the rolling stock moves. Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.681/205.69, Now #3 Best prior run: 6.734/204.76, Was #19 Right Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.705/205.44, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.741/205.57, Was #21 Dave Connolly is on the bump spot at 6.720.
Grumpy power shoots Yates way up the ladder and Naylor gets in. Like I said, lots of movement and it's sure not over yet. Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 7.237/142.51, Now #18 Best prior run: 6.720/204.79, Was #18 Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.685/206.20, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.720/205.47, Was #17 Enders is barely outside the field in the 17th slot. They need to show consistency here and get the run they need. And that's exactly what they do.
Connolly has problems and shuts off right about half track. He's going to have to count on tomorrow's first session if he wants to race on Sunday. Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.640/206.61, Now #1 Best prior run: 6.702/205.54, Was #12 Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.691/206.57, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.717/205.79, Was #16 You have to admire Gaines' class act. Clyde West has been his crew chief ever since their Comp days, and that kind of consistency pays off.
But all the fireworks are in the other line. Johnson absolutely kills the first half of the track with some numbers lot lower than anything we've seen so far. That parlays into the top spot.
Allen Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.977 sec., 330ft-2.764, 660ft-4.259/164.63mph, 1,000ft-5.551 V. Gaines' incremental times: 60ft-0.994 sec., 330ft-2.801, 660ft-4.305/164.45mph, 1,000ft-5.600 Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.659/206.51, Now #2 Best prior run: 6.696/205.76, Was #12 Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.695/206.16, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.712/205.85, Was #16 And here's AJ stablemate, running the same power.
It's another great pass for the Mopars. Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.666/206.48, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.692/206.13, Was #12 Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.653/206.80, Now #2 Best prior run: 6.703/205.63, Was #15 Koretsky was #1 when the session started. He's 12th now.
Jeg has some big horsepower so don't be surprised at any number he puts up.
He gets close, but not the top. Koretsky upsets all numerology geeks with a 6.666 Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.627/208.30, Now #1 Best prior run: 6.679/207.40, Was #6 Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.655/207.91, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.677/207.21, Was #5 And here's the acid test. Though there are many legitimate challengers, these two cars are still standard of the class. Will the Mopars hold on?
Are there any more questions? What can be said? That's a real blow to the gut for all the guys who thought they had what it took.
Naylor hangs on to the sixteenth spot.

Results for Qualifying Round 3
COMMERCE, Ga. - ATLANTA - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 27th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Matt Scranton Runs 6.732/204.85, Now #21 Best prior run: 6.771/204.23, Was #23 Right Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.736/205.60, Now #22 Best prior run: 17.096/41.00, Was #28 Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 37 percent, barometer 29.34 inches, adjusted altitude 1,690 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.
Though some of the bikes picked up, don't look for anything crazy to happen in this session. That 1700 feet of adjusted altitude will have a lot to do with it for these 500 inch racers.
Just like a lot of other racers here, both cars move towards the wall on the leave.
And, as expected, the performances weren't astounding.
Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.866/199.05, Now #28 Best prior run: 6.877/198.99, Was #28 Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.655/206.61, Now #5 Best prior run: 6.720/204.79, Was #18 Here's a interesting pair.
We've got a Ford on the line. And Dave Connolly is in the other lane and isn't qualified. Both of those are pretty unusual statements.
I think there's a good chance for Dave to go in, and he does. His Tommy Utt tuneup puts him deep into the show. That's the run they've been looking for all weekend. Left Lane: Bill Windham Runs 6.740/205.13, Now #24 Best prior run: 6.860/196.85, Was #27 Windham has been as fast as 6.85 but has his work cut out for him here. He's been very steady in his previous qualifying passes here with no hint of the fireworks from the last race.
He picks up a tenth, but it's not enough. Straight, smooth pass though. Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 22.397/34.36, Now #23 Best prior run: 6.737/205.19, Was #23 Schmidt would have been paired with Windham but gets to run by himself.
And that was not good. Not good at all. Schmidt blows the tires off from the first inch the car moves. It heads toward the wall and he expertly gets it straightened out. Left Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.735/204.29, Now #22 Best prior run: 6.823/202.79, Was #27 Right Lane: Roger Brogdon Runs 6.730/205.57, Now #20 Best prior run: 6.732/204.85, Was #20 Brogdon makes a pretty run but it's not quite enough. The car moved right, as the rest did, but Roger nudged it back into the groove.
Tom Hammonds is on the bump spot at 6.702. Left Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 6.764/203.49, Now #27 Best prior run: 6.817/202.30, Was #27 Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.747/203.95, Now #19 Best prior run: 6.727/204.63, Was #19 Both cars make smooth passes, but the conditions are killing them. Left Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.703/206.16, Now #17 Best prior run: 6.744/205.10, Was #26 Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.722/205.04, Now #19 Best prior run: 6.718/204.23, Was #18 And Humpreys misses by .001. The Eric Luzinski set up was there, but there's only so much to work with. Left Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.703/206.07, Now #18 Best prior run: 6.705/205.44, Was #18 Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.696/205.72, Now #16 Best prior run: 6.702/206.01, Was #16 Hammonds has been hanging on the bump and would like to move up a bit. Remember, his crew chief is Jerry Eckman, who's seen this track a time or two.
Hammonds hammers the starting line with a stellar .979 60 foot and a great 2.796 330. He's one of the few cars to run fast but it doesn't move him off the bump. Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.670/206.57, Now #8 Best prior run: 6.695/206.16, Was #15 Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.685/206.83, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.687/206.39, Was #12 This pair steps up and proves me wrong.
Mike Edwards' incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.781, 660ft-4.283/164.05mph, 1,000ft-5.579 Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.800, 660ft-4.302/164.65mph, 1,000ft-5.595 Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.662/206.39, Now #7 Best prior run: 6.691/206.57, Was #15 Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.688/206.20, Now #14 Best prior run: 6.685/206.01, Was #13 Now that we know a major move is possible, this pair is a bit more interesting than it was a few seconds ago. Both teams can run at the very top of the list.
Gaines gets it done. I was mentioning Clyde West yesterday and he shows his stuff on that pass.
No help for the Piranaz car. Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.692/206.29, Now #15 Best prior run: 6.690/206.80, Was #15 Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.691/205.94, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.681/205.69, Was #10 A pair of former champions on the line, with Bill Jenkins looking on.
Though Yates will stay where he was, he has to be pleased with driving away from WJ.
Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.996 sec., 330ft-2.798, 660ft-4.302/163.83mph, 1,000ft-5.599 Jim Yates' incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.792, 660ft-4.300/164.17mph, 1,000ft-5.598 Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.678/205.69, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.685/206.10, Was #13 Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.665/206.42, Now #8 Best prior run: 6.666/206.48, Was #8 Title for the pair on the line? "Racers who would be the most fun to hang out with on a Saturday night".
Morgan steps up. Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.690/205.94, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.685/206.20, Was #13 Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.681/206.39, Now #6 Best prior run: 6.659/206.51, Was #6 Neither of the cars are able to improve. They have to be happy with their consistency, though, because that's what allows you to stay late on race day. Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.678/207.30, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.655/207.91, Was #4 Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.665/206.67, Now #2 Best prior run: 6.640/206.61, Was #2 Nothing special for these guys. Line missed a bit as he had too much wheelspeed at the hit. Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.658/206.54, Now #3 Best prior run: 6.653/206.80, Was #3 Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.631/208.71, Now #1 Best prior run: 6.627/208.30, Was #1 Coughlin would love to flex his Cagnazzi Power muscle here.
But, just like yesterday, Anderson has an answer to those who question his dominance. He only loses .004 (Jeg lost .005) and runs TOP SPEED of the event!
Amazing. Simply amazing.
We've got one more session. C'mon back.

Results for Qualifying Round 4
COMMERCE, Ga. - ATLANTA - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 27th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Steve Schmidt No Time, Now #25 Best prior run: 6.737/205.19, Was #25 Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.855/199.61, Now #28 Best prior run: 6.866/199.05, Was #28
3:49 p.m. and it's the final session for the Pro Stock guys.
If I was a betting man, I'd say that this session is just going to burn some expensive racing gas with no significant changes in the order.
Schmidt got everybody's attention sitting under the tower as his car backfired when he tried to start it and we saw a pretty large scoop fire. After a couple of seconds of confusion, Schmidt simply hit the starter again to draw the flames into the engine and everything was cool.
Unfortunately, his pass looked just like his last one where the wheelspeed immediately jumped into the twilight zone when he dropped the hammer.
Haas makes another lap. Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 12.006/72.06, Now #24 Best prior run: 6.736/205.60, Was #24 Right Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 17.192/41.61, Now #27 Best prior run: 6.764/203.49, Was #27 Both cars want to get in.
Both cars had a setup that was much too aggressive. The spun their tires in unison and were off the throttle by 250 feet. Left Lane: Roger Brogdon Runs 14.476/44.73, Now #21 Best prior run: 6.730/205.57, Was #21 Right Lane: Bill Windham Runs 6.766/204.01, Now #26 Best prior run: 6.740/205.13, Was #26 Windham lines up next to Brogdon. Both cars have a long way to go at this point.
Tom Hammonds is on the bump spot at 6.696.
Brogdon blows the tires off and heads to the center. Windham makes a nice looking, straight pass but it's not quick enough. Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 12.755/67.05, Now #20 Best prior run: 6.727/204.63, Was #20 Right Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.814/202.91, Now #23 Best prior run: 6.735/204.29, Was #23 Most of these cars are looking for hundredths right now, not thousandths. That's not a good thing for them as I just don't think it's going to happen.
Watson heads for the centerline and shuts down.
Rizzo goes to the finish line with no problems. Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.928/203.12, Now #19 Best prior run: 6.718/204.23, Was #19 Right Lane: Matt Scranton Runs 6.748/205.01, Now #22 Best prior run: 6.732/204.85, Was #22 Krisher goes to the center line just like the rest, but pulls it back to the center. Nice driving job, but it's not going to matter.
Scranton makes a decent pass. Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 18.249/42.04, Now #16 Best prior run: 6.696/205.72, Was #16 Right Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.701/205.54, Now #17 Best prior run: 6.703/206.07, Was #18 Naylor only needs .01, but that's a bunch in this class.
Hammonds moved around like the rest. I'd bet his 16th position is safe and the guy who can bump him out is pulling up next. Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.752/196.93, Now #14 Best prior run: 6.685/206.01, Was #14 Right Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.733/205.16, Now #18 Best prior run: 6.703/206.16, Was #18 Humphreys has great equipment but it's going to take the pass of his young Pro Stock career at this point.
And he doesn't get it. It's a great effort for Justin but Hammonds is going to race tomorrow.
Stanfield leaves a smokescreen from half track on. The track is checked and other than a couple of swipes on the starting line there's no problem. Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.728/205.82, Now #12 Best prior run: 6.685/206.83, Was #12 Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.718/205.22, Now #15 Best prior run: 6.690/206.80, Was #15 It's a Johnson family gathering on the starting line. Both will race tomorrow, but both are way down the ladder as they prepare to run.
Like I said, I think we're just burning gas. Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.728/205.35, Now #11 Best prior run: 6.681/205.69, Was #11 Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.723/204.76, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.685/206.20, Was #13 Pretty much side by side and some decent data for tomorrow. Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.709/205.85, Now #8 Best prior run: 6.665/206.42, Was #8 Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.320/142.29, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.678/205.69, Was #10 Koretsky's moving around in the left lane and Morgan seems to nose over down track. I didn't look to his lane in time to see any movement, so it may be an equipment problem. Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.712/206.20, Now #6 Best prior run: 6.659/206.51, Was #6 Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.696/205.82, Now #9 Best prior run: 6.670/206.57, Was #9 There's a real difference in the lanes right now so look for the top half cars to stage in the right side tomorrow if nothing changes.
I don't think I've seen a single pair where the left lane outran the right lane to 330 in this session. Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 16.652/39.20, Now #5 Best prior run: 6.655/206.61, Was #5 Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.696/206.20, Now #7 Best prior run: 6.662/206.39, Was #7 Connolly can't get past 150 foot in that nasty left lane as his car darts to the center.
Gaines makes a good pass to work from tomorrow. It's pretty stout for the session. Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.700/205.91, Now #2 Best prior run: 6.640/206.61, Was #2 Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.659/207.53, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.655/207.91, Was #4 That's a HUGE pass for Line. Look back above and re-read what the other cars were capable of.
Johnson manages to get his car through. Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.673/208.01, Now #1 Best prior run: 6.627/208.30, Was #1 Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.685/206.04, Now #3 Best prior run: 6.653/206.80, Was #3 Jeggie was ahead most of the race but Anderson came storming by.
Greg makes the left lane look normal.
